About Me

3687

Hi! My name is Lauren. I’m a patient advocate, a surgical neurophysiologist, an anesthetist, and currently fighting stage IIIC melanoma. My diagnosis came as a huge surprise, and it made me rethink my approach to health after 10 years in healthcare. I have learned that true health is a combination of body, mind, and soul. We cannot cure our illnesses simply by taking a medicine – we have to be proactive and take responsibility for our health. I am combining holistic methods with western medicine to give this battle everything I have. I call this a “realistic holistic” approach. Please join me as I approach life, love, and health in a whole new way!

Hi Vicki! It’s really hard to NOT freak out with a melanoma diagnosis. The only thing we can do is take things one step at a time and enjoy what we have, while we have it. I hope things don’t progress – I’m crossing my fingers for you!

I am having surgery to remove regional lymph nodes by my inginaul node. I am worried about the surgery and recovery but mostly I am worried that there will be melanoma in the other nodes. Nothing showed up on the Pet Scan. Did you have nodes removed? How was the surgery? What treatment are you doing now and how are you feeling.
I loved your skin care package!

Hi Vicki! Yes, I had a complete lymph node dissection where they removed 30 nodes. Some of my earlier posts show the scars and the compression stocking that I now wear. I completely understand your concerns – a PET scan doesn’t show small cells of melanoma in the lymph nodes. But that is GREAT news that none of your nodes showed activity on the scan! That means you are ahead of any major spread. I know it is incredibly hard, but try and stay positive! When is your surgery? Hope it goes well – I’ll be thinking about you!

I had the surgery on April 4th. It was a lymph node dissection. The took about 20 node. I did not get a fancy stocking like you had! I just had to wrap up in an ace bandage. I am on blood thinners for some reason. I have to give myself a shot ever night for about 3 for weeks. I skipped last night because I have a cut that won’t heal from where they took a drain tube out. I still have one more drain tube in. Where are you with your treatments right now? I am not sure what the next step is for me, I am waiting for the pathology report from my surgery. I keep thinking its bad news because I have not heard anything yet. Waiting is the worst

    Thinking of you too!

Waiting is the WORST!! I know it is incredibly hard, but try to not let your imagination run wild while you wait. It takes time to go through every node to test for melanoma. Hopefully they will take you off the blood thinners when you get the second drain taken out. I got my compression stocking about 2 months after my surgery – they won’t fit you unless you’re fully healed and showing signs of lymphedema. Hang in there and keep us updated!

My mind play terrible tricks on me. I skipped my last two shots of blood thinner to let a wound heal from where they took the first drain out. ….

    Hi
Checking in to see how you are feeling. I wasn’t sure where to post. I am meeting with the oncologist tomorrow about my treatment plan. I ended up with a seroma and cellutis from the surgery. Yuck. Hope you and the kitties and bees are well. I have a bump on my ankle where most of my swelling is going on, I am hoping it is not an in transit. I loved your Mother’s Day post. Do you have problems with Lymphedema?

    Take care
    Vicki

Hi Vicki! How did your appointment go? I also had a seroma, directly under my WLE. Gravity is the worst, isn’t it?! My lymphedema mostly flares when I eat too much salt, travel, and when it’s too hot (and Summer’s here!) Hope you’re doing well post surgery!
